The Alabama Bass Trail 100 Series is gearing up for its second stop this Saturday, June 7, at the renowned Lake Eufaula. Just a few weeks ago, the ABT South Division held a fishing event at Lake Eufaula, giving teams a preview of what to expect this weekend. Charlie Williams and Michael Smith took first place with a catch of 24.17 pounds, while Frank Bradfield and “New Daddy” Tyler Morgan finished in second with 22.48 pounds. This week, Tyler will provide us with insights on what the top 100 bass fishing teams can expect at Lake Eufaula.
Tyler said, “I consider myself a shallow water angler. This past weekend, I fished an event and caught 21.50 pounds. The fish are really biting right now, and the lake is in great condition. When we were here a couple of weeks ago, the water level was about a foot and a half below full pool, but now it’s a foot and a half above the banks. This increase in water has created much more shallow cover available for fishing.”
Additionally, “There is a massive mayfly hatch occurring at the moment. With the higher water levels, the mayflies are now in the bushes with branches hanging directly above the water, leaving hardly any gap. The bass are currently in a full post-spawn pattern and are actively feeding. For teams in the ABT 100 who enjoy fishing in shallow waters, this weekend should be a slug fest.”
“The water temperatures are still in the low to mid-70s, which will help keep the fish feeding in shallow areas. If there is current, it will enhance the deep lake bite, but the higher water levels will give the water some stain, making the shallow bite more effective as well. I believe that a win could easily come from using a frog or a swim jig.”
“On the river, visibility is about 8 to 10 inches, which suits my fishing style. During the South Event, we ventured far up the river and only saw two other boats in that area. I prefer to be away from boat traffic, as I believe it impacts the shallow bite. I don’t want other boats disturbing my fishing spots. I’ve been out every weekend since and have caught 22 and 21 pounds, but the lake keeps improving. You’re going to hear many anglers talking about catching big bags on ledge busters, but in this tournament, if the current is like it was, they’re going to do really well with a big blade, offshore.”
When asked about the weight to win, he shared, “The fishing has been more consistent than I’ve seen in a long time. Usually, you have one big weekend and then wait until fall for another big one. Recently, it has just been steady. You need about 22 pounds to win pretty much any tournament on the lake right now, even on a bad day. I think this trend is going to continue beyond the ABT South. I’m estimating that you’ll need to be in the 25 to 26-pound range to compete, especially since there are anglers who can take advantage of the shallow bite, given how perfect the conditions are. If they can catch one or two big fish, we’re likely to see around 15 bags over 20 pounds. I believe achieving 19 to 20 pounds is definitely doable for most of the competitors. Right now, the 3.00 to 3.75-pound fish are easy to catch since they are so plentiful. The lake is healthy, and I can’t believe how well it’s fishing compared to the last several years. I think this weekend we might even see an 8-pounder weighed in.”
“Eufaula is known as the ‘Bass Capital of the World,’ a reputation that stems from its excellent offshore fishing. The area is abundant with shallow cover and habitat, which attracts many anglers. I would expect around 70 teams to spend more than six hours fishing offshore. The introduction of Livescope has significantly improved the offshore bite, making it much easier to locate those offshore brush piles. Many man-made brush piles can now be easily found with Livescope. Additionally, Eufaula boasts some exceptional old-school river ledges that often go unnoticed because they’re not as fun to look at on the screen as a brush pile. Back in the day, before Livescope, teams would fish shallow some and just fish the bank, but now they can use Livescope to find the schools up shallow too.” Tyler shared, “I really wish I was able to fish this event. If there was a way to sign up, I would sure be in this weekend. It’s going to be a great event, and I will be for sure watching the live stream.”
The weather forecast for Saturday in Eufaula, AL, predicts partly sunny and humid conditions, with a high of 90°F and a low of 70°F. Anglers should be prepared for potential afternoon thunderstorms. The week leading up to the event has been consistently warm and stable, which should create favorable conditions for fishing and lead to some impressive catches.
As the ABT 100 Series approaches its second event at Lake Eufaula, anglers are prepared to encounter both opportunities and challenges. Given the dynamic seasonal patterns, a competitive Angler of the Year race, and the lake’s renowned reputation, this tournament is set to be a significant moment in the 2025 season. Both participants and fans can look forward to an exciting competition in one of Alabama’s top bass fishing destinations.
